EXPRESS YOUR OPINION ANYWAY
DECEMBER 01, 2008
Dear {!firstname},

In times when the outer world often tells us to shut up, be quiet and be calm, it will make a huge difference to do just the opposite. I remember too many situations in my life when I was told not to speak out for different reasons - since it would not please the other person, since it would not be the appropriate attitude, or just since "one doesn't do it". Sometimes the reason was even that it would be of disadvantage to me to convey what my truth is.

One way to express your truth: If you know somebody who could contribute to this topic, please ask this person to share her or his story using the form on my website http://www.express-your-voice.com/contact-me.html.

EXPRESS YOUR OPINION ANYWAY

Should we be quiet? Should we shut up? Should we let anybody keep us from expressing our thoughts?

Just think about why other people want us to shut up. Mostly it is because they think it will be of disadvantage to them if we speak out. If they are friends, it might be that they fear it could be of disadvantage for our lives. Maybe they are right.

However, it is a human right to express one's voice as long as we don't harm anybody else. Do we respect human rights? Of course we do. Humans just feel that everybody should be allowed to freely speak her or his thoughts.

Law is not the only reason why we should continue expressing our voice, even if we are knocked down or in a difficult situation. This other reason I am speaking about is the respect which we show to ourselves. We respect others and listen to them, and so should we also behave with ourselves.

Do we tell others to shut up, to be quiet? Probably, we would never consider doing this. That is why we should treat ourselves equally and speak out whatever is inside and needs to be expressed.

This month, I challenge you to watch situations closely when you feel that somebody wants you to shut up or be calm. Can you find out why this person tries to control your voice? Whatever the reason, keep expressing your opinion and let the other person know that you are not going to be quiet.

Nobody can stop you from expressing your thoughts except you. Nobody can allow you to convey your truth except you.

FOUR WAYS TO CONVEY YOUR THOUGHTS WHEN YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO

  1. Write down what you have to say on a sheet of paper. Then look for a place where you can shout it out without disturbing anybody.
  2. Meet the person you would like to talk to, and tell her or him in a respectful and friendly manner how you feel.
  3. Just say "I know that I am not supposed to say this, but...", and then follow with exactly what you want to convey.
  4. Alternatively, you can start with "I don't dare to say...", followed by your truth about the topic.

I send you energy to express and reach your goals this month anyway, no matter which circumstances you are confronted with.
