In order to reach your objectives for the upcoming year, it is necessary to establish your goals by writing them down. This will make it easier for you to compare your initial objectives to what you actually accomplish by the end of 2009. Don't dismiss this idea, since it is the obligatory first step towards making your dreams for 2009 come true!
After jotting down your intentions for 2009, please revise this list with regard to the available time. Are your goals realistic for one year? Or is it likely that you will need more time to complete some of the tasks? Most of the time, we think that we can accomplish too much within a given period.
My experience has shown that most tasks demand at least twice as much time as one assumes. My suggestion is to stretch your objectives for 2009 over the period of the two years 2009 and 2010. Alternatively, you could select the more important half of your goals for 2009 and dismiss the others.
Please ask yourself whether it is you who wants to reach the objectives on your list or if you just think that somebody else expects you to do these things. Be as honest with yourself as possible. Believe me, I know, based on my own experience, that we are not likely to achieve objectives that are not truly our own.
Many books have been written about how we can attain our goals. The only method I can recommend on this topic is to do what is necessary in order to achieve what we want. If our tasks are complex, we need to cut them into pieces small enough to cope with easily, and then take them one step at a time. There is no other way - obviously.
Of course, you can create an environment for yourself which helps you to attain what you desire. You can join support groups, you can attend courses on the topic, and you can talk about your progress with friends and colleagues. Whatever works for you is good.
I suggest you not think too much about your possible outcome. You will find more energy to work on your projects if you dedicate yourself to completing your tasks instead of imagining the potential results and what other people might think about them. My experience is that thinking too much can cause you serious problems in regard to your motivation.
Always remember that the only thing you can do is to work hard at attaining your goals. All you can do is make your best effort - whether or not it will be sufficient is not up to you.
