LEADERSHIP QUALITIES
MARCH 01, 2010

Dear {!firstname},

Imagine yourself being the boss of a huge business who has to lead his employees. Showing leadership qualitieswould surely help you by encouraging your employees to do their workand to follow your example. There are so many different leadershipqualities such as integrity, respect, honesty, wisdom, dedication, persistence, optimism, independence, individuality, innovativeness, courage, responsibility, flexibility, teamwork, credibility, loyalty, fairness, competency and inspiration, just to name a few of them.

Whichare the leadership qualities which are the most important to you? Isone quality more relevant than the others? Should there be a specificorder, no matter who you are? Or does it depend on your personalitywhich leadership qualities you appreciate more? Does the leadershipquality which would most benefit your employees depend on each specificsituation?

LEADERSHIP QUALITIES

Let us take a closer look at integrity. Overall, yourlevel of integrity is the level of congruence between your idealisticpersonal qualities and the practical reality of your own life. Inmodern business life, somebody who has integrity is somebody who isincorruptible, and who is believed to have constant positive personalqualities. Thus, living with integrity means to have many of the otherleadership qualities, and not to let anybody argue oneself out of it.

Integrity can be considered as the most important leadership quality, since it conveys also that one has many other qualities to offer. However, imagine a boss leading his employees without integrity. Hemight be corruptible, or just not living up to his own values.Obviously, such a boss wouldn't be a good role model for his employees, would he? Employees tend to imitate their boss' behavior as it actuallyis, and not how he believes he should be.

Respect and fairnessare two other very important leadership qualities nowadays. When youremployees know that you will be fair to them and treat them withrespect whatever mistake they might make, it will be much easier forthem to approach you and talk to you about issues. Your relations withthem will improve, and you will know instantly what is really going onin your business.

Dedication and persistence are two qualities thatshould be mentioned, too. If you as the boss dedicate yourself to yourwork and follow your goals with persistence, then your employees willwatch you and imitate your attitude. They will dedicate themselves totheir work, and not give up until it is finished.

Inspiration is a mainleadership quality, because it will give your employees a vision thatwill help them to work with dedication and persistence towards yourbusiness' goals. Innovation, optimism, and responsibility areadditional core values that will support your business growth. Forinstance, optimism will have an impact on your customers, andInnovation will help your business serve the market.

We could goon and on with this discussion, however it might just be the right timefor you to start a list of your leadership qualities, and to put themin your own order of relevance. This list will reveal much about whoyou are and how you treat others. The next time you have a conflictwith a boss, employee, or co-worker, please check your list to find outwhich qualities might have been neglected.

QUOTATION OF THE MONTH

'It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.'

Nelson Mandela
